UK donors boost appeal as Zamzam’s qurbani distribution supports a record 1.9 million Somalis
A record 1.9 million Somalis benefited from Zamzam Foundation’s provision of nutritious qurbani meat, Eid gifts and other assistance during the Eid Al-Adha festivities in June 2025.
The efforts of hard-working Zamzam staff and volunteers on the ground were supported by donations from around the world. Donors in the UK gave their support for the first time through Zamzam UK, alongside contributions from Türkiye and the Middle East, Australia and the United States.
Two videos featured on this page capture the joy of qurbani for families and the importance of Zamzam’s qurbani programme for farming livelihoods.
One is a short video diary recorded by Zamzam’s Sugow Mohamed as he took part in our qurbani meat distribution in Mogadishu. The other is an interview with Feisal Mohamed Ahmed, a livestock farmer from Kismayo, who explains how supplying meat to us provides significant income for his family.
With your support Zamzam Foundation was able to assist an unprecedented 318,872 families this year – an estimated 1,918,882 people.
Zamzam’s activities across Somalia included:
- Providing qurbani meat to a record 1,909,032 people
- Organising the purchase and slaughter of 18,530 sheep, goats, cattle and camels for the qurbani sacrifice and meat distribution, providing a significant boost for the income of poor farmers.
- Providing 50 families with a live goat to enhance their livelihoods.
- Distributing 2,102 Eid gifts, including new clothes for 1,452 children.
- Providing food packs and hot meals for 6,000 people.
- Giving zakat cash assistance to 400 hungry families, benefiting 2,400 people.
“It is a privilege for us to be able to connect donors in the UK with families in need in Somalia through seasonal food distributions in Ramadan and at Eid Al-Adha,” says Tahir Tahir, Chair of Zamzam UK’s board of trustees.
“I want to extend our sincere thanks to everyone who supported our qurbani appeal in the UK, enabling us to reach out with compassion and practical support to people living in extreme poverty.”
All Zamzam’s interventions are based on rigorous needs assessments to identify those who need most support. Before any aid is delivered, the team listens to the needs of the community, observes local conditions, and identifies where resources will have the greatest impact. This process ensures that donations are used effectively, making a real difference in the lives of those who need it most.
