The importance of zakat

Zakat is an obligatory act of worship for every sane, adult Muslim with wealth exceeding a certain amount. The wealth threshold is stipulated by Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and is known as the Nisab.

Muslims must pay 2.5% of their wealth as zakat if they have been in possession of wealth equivalent to the Nisab or more for the past 12 months in the lunar year.

Zakat is much more than an obligation to Allah (SWT). It is a means of supporting those who are less fortunate than us. It is a mechanism for caring for those around us and sustaining all God’s people in an equitable balance. And it is a way to please Allah (SWT) and to be blessed through following his will.

Zakat is also a means of expressing our gratitude for Allah’s blessings. For Muslims, wealth is not an entitlement that belongs to us. Wealth is an Amanah, something that belongs to Allah (SWT) but is entrusted to us by him. We are accountable for how it is used.

Paying zakat not only redistributes our wealth but also purifies it in the eyes of Allah (SWT). If we are blessed with the good fortune of being able to pay zakat, we should do so happily for the sake of pleasing Allah (SWT) and supporting the poor and vulnerable.
